Andy Steingold '81Re-Elected Mayor of Safety Harbour

[November, 2007] Andy Steingold '81 has just been re-elected to another term as Mayor of Safety Harbour, Florida. As of the the November 19, filing deadline, he had no opposition for the January 29, 2008 election.

Brother Steingold was initiated into Delta Lambda in 1981. He finished his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, and received his Law degree from Cumberland University.

Andy and his wife Maryanne have three children - Alexandria, Sydney and Samuel. He competes in the Triathalon and is an avid bicyclist. Andy practices law when he is not running the City.

He would love to hear from his fellow alumni Brothers: 750 Main Street / Safety Harbor, FL 34695 / Tel: 727-724-1555 / Fax: 727-724-1566

Hubert Green Honored By World Golf Hall of Fame

[November, 2007] At Florida State in the 1960s, everyone knew that golfing great Hubert Green '65 was a Pike. His customized Pi Kappa Alpha badge was white gold with green emeralds all around the bezel. Hubert Green remains one of the most loyal and generous Delta Lambda alumni. As an undergraduate he served the Chapter as Pledgemaster, Kitchen Manager and Sergeant-at-Arms.

The man Golf Digest called "one of the great players of his generation" was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on November 12, 2007, at the World Golf Village in St Augustine. Green's career is one of the most storied and dramatic in professional golf.

Since turning professional in 1969, Green won 19 PGA titles in his 26-year career as a touring pro. He still ranks among the top 30 all-time winners on the Tour. His major championship wins include the 1977 U.S. Open at Southern Hills, and the 1985 PGA Championship at Cherry Hills. He starred on the Ryder Cup teams of 1977, 1979 and 1985. Since joining the Champions Tour (formerly The Masters Tour) in 1997 he has won four titles.

Hubert Green came to Florida State from Birmingham to play collegiate golf for the Seminoles. His older brother Maurice Green (Gamma Alpha '64) had been initiated at the University of Alabama, so he was already inclined toward the Pikes when he went through rush.

Brothers of that era remember Hubert Green as supremely cool under pressure. That characteristic was never more evident than in the 1977 U.S. Open when Green played the final round under a death threat. With FBI agents in the wings, Hubert Green calmly shot a championship score and won his first major PGA tournament.

Green joined the Champions Tour in 1997 and did well, easily identified on any course by his trademark leather, broad-brimmed hat. In 2003 he was diagnosed with throat cancer and began a brutal regimen of treatment. Fortunately, the cancer went into remission and he was eventually able to return to professional golf.

Brother Green and his wife Michelle live in Panama City, and he enjoys hearing from his fellow Pikes from chapter days.

Former Seminole Track Star Dave Frew '67

Hi Brothers,

It's been a very long time. How is everyone? Not much change for me. Still with the same company since 1973. Still living in Atlanta and traveling all over the world with my client's corporate sales incentive travel programs. Looks like the Delta Lambda Chapter has really become the fraternity of the campus.

Got married in 1989. Great wife; a nice Greek girl. We have no children so she travels with me on my client programs.

Any knowledge of the whereabouts of Dave Orr '63 or Wayne Currie '66? Lost touch with both of them and would like to say hello if you have their e-mail addresses.

Great looking website!

Regards,

Dave Frew

Jay Hurley Receives Appointment to the
Service Academy Nominating Committee

[August, 2007] After serving on Governor Charlie Crist's transition team as the Team Leader for the Department of Military Affairs, Brother Jay Hurley '79 has been appointed to the Service Academy Nominating Committee by United States Senator Mel Martinez.

"Working with Micky Fernandez '77, Brent Sembler '78, Tom Wheeler '78 and many other Brothers on behalf of Charlie was a true honor. And then, following his election as Governor, being able to sit across the table from Charlie in the Capitol and brief him on our state's military preparedness and capabilities was an experience that I will cherish forever."

Jay 's term on the Service Academy Selection Committee will be for two years; he will be responsible for helping determine the appointments of future military leaders to attend West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy.

Now a successful trial lawyer in Fort Lauderdale, Jay recently completed a term as Chairman of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee. He has been active in Republican Party politics and has been identified as a potential candidate for public office.

Following his graduation from Florida State, Jay entered the United States Navy and graduated from the prestigeous and demanding Naval Aviation program. For his service, Jay was awarded the Kuwait Liberation Medal, National Defense Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commedation medal.

Jason Abeles '00 Marries Tera Chambers in May

[August, 2007] On May 19, 2007, Delta Lambda Chapter Refounding member, Jason Abeles '00 and Tera Chambers were married in Sarasota, Florida at the Hyatt hotel.

Twenty brothers attended the ceremony along with many family members and friends.

Jason Vetzel, Steven Jessup, Ryan Callahan, Scott Ewing, and Adam Lisewski, were all in the wedding party.

Following the wedding, Jason and Tera enjoyed a two week honeymoon in Maui, Hawaii. They are now living just outside of Tampa where Jason is the Vice President of private banking for the Royal Bank of Canada and Tera is teaching school. Jason also serves as Social Chair of the FSU Tampa Alumni Association.

Please e-mail Jason and Tera with your congratulations!

Lieutenant (JG) Jared Sweetser '01 En Route to Korea

[August, 2007] In the fall of 1999, Jared Sweetser was a freshman on FSU's Varsity Track team. The future All-ACC Honor Roll pick and pole vault star for the Seminoles pledged Alpha Tau Omega, a mistake he would very soon correct. "We were in our regular pledge class meeting, "Sweetser recalled, "When one of the chapter officers came in and confirmed rumors about the Pikes coming back. He told us not to worry; he said that we'd all be graduated by the time the Pikes took over again."

Sweetser reasoned that if the other fraternities were so intimidated by the idea of Pike returning, maybe he needed to have a look. Jared's older brother Chandler Sweetser '97 had been initiated into Pi Kappa Alpha at the University of Florida two years earlier, but of course when Jared arrived at FSU Delta Lambda was still off campus.
After discarding ATO, Jared made himself available to be interviewed by Pi Kappa Alpha's expansion consultants. In February, Jared Sweetser became the first new re-founding member, and the first of eleven members of the Seminole Track team to join the colony.

"Dear Brothers," he writes, "It has been too long since I have been back to see you in Tallahassee. All is going great here in Norfolk, VA. and I am having a terrific time in the Navy. I just finished my tour of duty on board my Submarine and am off to Seoul, Korea for a year out there. All of my best to you."

phi phi k a,

Jared Sweetser
jaredsweetser@websly.com

As he noted, Brother Sweetser '01 has just finished his three year tour on board the USS MONTPELIER (SSN 765), home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. As Supply Officer of the Los Angeles Class Submarine, he was the Department Head responsible for the annual budget, repair part inventory and the food service operations. During his tenure, his department received the highest grades across the boards for efficiency and operational support as well as recognition as having the best submarine food service in the Atlantic Fleet.

Jared will be moving on to another operational tour in Seoul, Korea, where
he will be handling logistics for Pacific Fleet Assets operating with and
under the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea.

Being so far from the Pike house can be tough, so Brothers are encouraged to drop him a line at his e-mail address above.

Editor's addendum: It's interesting to note that when PiKA returned to FSU in 2000, the dominant fraternities included SAE, ATO, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi. All four fraternities are now gone from campus. ATO and Sigma Phi Epsilon were dismissed this year by the University on charges of hazing. SAE was dismissed for hazing back in 2001; their application for re-admission was denied in 2006 and they now have an unrecognized colony at FSU. Pi Kappa Phi alumni voluntarily pulled the charter of their 100+-man chapter a year ago after a string of bad behavior. We hope that all four chapters will return soon, and succeed. Competition makes the fraternity system better all around.

Florida State currently has twenty recognized fraternities in the IFC. The top chapters today include the traditional trio of Pike, Lambda Chi and Phi Delt, plus Delta Tau Delta, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Chi, Phi Kappa Tau and KA.

[February, 2007] On December 9, 2006, refounder Jeremy To '01 and Kim Riecks, FSU ADPi, were married in Orlando. Under the bright lights of the space shuttle launch site and with Journey's Don't Stop Believing playing amongst the twinkling lights at Cypress Grove Park, many ADPi and Pike's celebrated the couple's nuptials.

Brothers Justin Davis, JJ Akos, Jon Andolina, Chris Koch, Joey Kaleikini and Shawn Hutcherson were all part of the bridal party. Among the attendees were many brothers who served on the executive council through their undergraduate years.

Jeremy and Kim then jetted off on a two week honeymoon to Paris and Rome. They currently reside in Orlando where Jeremy is a clinical software analyst and Kim is a Pediatrics Intensive Care Nurse.

Joe "Tweeder" Cherry Engaged

[January, 2007] Brother Joe Cherry '01 proposed to Andrea Miklos this past Christmas and she said yes! Their wedding is planned for September 27, 2008. Joe met Andrea in Charlotte, N.C. in October 2005 and they hit it off from the start. They are looking forward to "a huge wedding with all the pikes" where surely Joe will lead the group in a rendition of the DreamGirl song."

Andrea is from Charlotte and attends Central Piedmont College where she is studying Interior Design. Joe served the Chapter in a variety of positions as an undergraduate including Dance Marathon Chair and Member-at-Large. He was also recognized as Tri-Delt's Tri-Dent Gent and Mr. Dance Marathon. Joe is a police officer with the Brunswick County Sherriff's Office and with the Hold Beach Police Department in his home state of North Carolina. Join us in wishing him congrats by e-mail at: jcsox09@gmail.com.
