HOUSE
DEDICATION WEEKEND
September 30 - October 1, 2005

On
a balmy October football Saturday morning, 250 Pi Kappa Alpha
Brothers spilled across the expansive front porch and down the
brick steps, in between the massive white columns and spread wide
across the sunlit grassy apron in front of the largest college
fraternity house in America for their historic dedication weekend
photograph.
Dave MacDonald '86 Will Marry In Thailand on November
7

[October, 2005]
Army veteran Dave MacDonald 86 is the brother of physicians
Stephen MacDonald '85 and Michael MacDonald '85,
both now flight surgeons in the United States Navy. "I was
the roommate and best friend of Herbert Grady Bowen '86,
also of the same pledge class as mine in the old Pike house. We
shared the front room in the house in the Fall of 1987."
"We were
both driving back to Melbourne Beach for the Thanksgiving holiday
of 1987 when we pulled over to the side of I-95 to put the roof
on the Jeep as it was starting to rain. We were in the emergency
lane near St. Augustine heading south. I was on the drivers
side of the Jeep and he was on the other side. I was having problems
putting the top into the grooves of the roof so we then switched
positions. Ten seconds later an 18-wheeler levels us. Jim Solomon
87 was in the car parked behind us. Everybody survived
but Herb. The last thing I remember was kneeling down next to his
body with Jim and giving him the Lords Prayer. We had the
funeral in his hometown of Cocoa Beach and all of the Pikes showed
up in huge numbers. I was numb. Herb
was killed 18 years ago but I swear there is not one week that goes
by to this day that I dont think of him and that accident."
Dave is now
a CPA and has been working in Saudi Arabia for the past 10 years.
"I am finally settling down with my lovely fiancé Apichaya.
This is my first marriage and we are getting married in Thailand
on November 7."

to friends and Pikes, "The beaches are gorgeous and the
weather is perfect. It is truely a paradise!" The bad news
is that Lt. Sullivan was just deployed to Iraq for six months as
part of the 3rd Radio Battalion. They'd love to hear from friends

Ed Barnes '71: Pi Kappa Alpha's National Chapter
Advisor
Of The Year, 2005

[August, 2005]
Recognizing both the achievements of Delta Lambda and the strength
of her alumni, the National Headquarters in Memphis this summer
named Ed Barnes '71 the Pi Kappa Alpha National Chapter
Advisor of the Year. Pictured with him above is Shawn Hutcherson
'01, past Delta Lambda SMC and currently National's Director
of Recruiting.
Ed was first
drafted to be Chapter Advisor for the Pike Chapter at Southern
Methodist University in 1993. At that time the chapter was desperate
-- they had only 18 members and were $40,000 in debt. Under Ed's
direction, by 1998 Pike had become the unquestioned leader of
the SMU Fraternity system. They were the largest fraternity, boasted
the highest grade point average, and were Overall Intramural Sports
Champions three years in a row.
Ed returned
to Tallahassee in 1998, and in 2000 Delta Lambda was recolonized.
Alumni turned to Ed for his proven leadership and asked him to
serve as Chapter Advisor. There is no need here to detail the
difficulties the new colony and chapter faced which included a
strong corps of entrenched rivals and a lack of competitive housing.
And yet, the new chapter benefited from Delta Lambda's good genes.
In 2005, Delta
Lambda won their fourth consecutive Smythe Award as one of the
top chapters in the National Fraternity. We also won the Overall
Intramural crown for the third year in a row, and for the fourth
time in five years. Today, Pi Kappa Alpha remains the largest
and most involved fraternity at Florida State. Congratulations
Ed, for an outstanding job well done!

Jeremy To and Kim Riecks Get Engaged!

[August,
2005] "I want to share with all my Delta Lambda Brothers,
that I proposed to my girlfriend, Kim Riecks, on August
12 and she accepted. A date has not been set yet, but we are
hoping the wedding will be in a year or so. Kim was a member
of Alpha Delta Pi sorority at FSU and was also a member of the
Dream Girl Court in 2004. Currently, Kim is an ER Nurse at Florida
Hospital in Orlando and I am an Application Analyst for Adventist
Health System". Jeremy To '01.

Costoya in Plantation. Mike and Janet Fernandez '77
were members of the host committee. Brent Sembler '78 is

David Ponder's Son Offered Football Scholarship
by FSU
[July
14, 2005] After taking part in Florida State's summer camp last
week, sensational Texas prep quarterback Christian Ponder
got the news he wanted to hear on Tuesday when FSU coaches offered
him a scholarship. It's the 16th scholarship offer he's received.
"I'm
pretty excited," Ponder said. "I've always liked Florida
State. My parents and my family are all excited for me." Christian
is the son of David Ponder '80, a three year starter at defensive
tackle for the Seminoles in the early 1980s.
A
6-foot-2, 206-pound quarterback from Colleyville, Texas, Ponder
is rated the No. 86 prospect in the state of Texas by Rivals.com.
As a junior, Ponder threw for roughly 1,500 yards in what he described
as a "running offense." He also sports scholarship offers
from Arizona, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Houston, Illinois, Iowa State,
North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Christian,
Texas-El Paso, Tulsa and Utah (among others).
Ponder
repeated on Thursday that his plan is to make a college decision
before his senior season begins. He said he had begun narrowing
down his choices in the last week "and then Florida State offered
and we changed things around." His mother, Christine, also
attended FSU. Christian Ponder's grandmother and aunt still live
in Cairo and the Ponders have other family members in the state.
Florida
State's decision is very good news for Pi Kappa Alpha. David Ponder
was not only a great player for the Seminoles, he was also a popular
leader and Brother of Delta Lambda Chapter. David was an active
member of the Pike rush committee, and won the FSU Intramural All-Greek
Heavyweight Wrestling Championship for the Pikes. In 1984, David
received the coveted Ken Spence Award honoring the
varsity athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of loyalty and
devotion to Pi Kappa Alpha.
Upon
the announcement of Florida State's scholarship offer to young Christian
Ponder we received a letter from Jay Hurley '79 who wrote,
"I cheered when I read your e-mail about Dave Ponder's son
possibly coming to FSU. Dave was not only one of my favorites, he
was a class act and one of the most down-to-earth Brothers that
I have known. We both knew Ken Spence '82 well. I also knew
the impact Ken's death had on Dave. I stood next to Dave when he
received the Ken Spence Award at the Shriner's Temple in Tallahassee.
I remember how emotional Dave got when the packed room chanted his
name for what seemed like an eternity. Dave deserves every good
thing that can happen for him. In that regard, I can't wait to see
his son wearing the garnet and gold."

for the Pikes. |
Giant
tackle # 85 David Ponder graced the cover of Athlon's

his spectacular slam-dunk tackles of Ohio State quarterback

a contract with the Dallas Cowboys. |

Look
Who's a Delta Lambda Pike!
[June,
2005] Ron Hazleton's Home Improvement Guide is a regular
feature on ABC's Good Morning America. The popular writer and
television personality known for his series of home improvement
books and television shows is Delta Lambda's own Ron Hazleton
'60.
In answer to our request for a photo to be displayed in the new
house, Brother Hazleton wrote, "I'm truly honored to be considered
as a candidate for the "Legends Room". I would certainly
be in the company of some very distinguished Brothers." He
went on to reminisce about his time in the Chapter: "Congratulations
on the new house. I have very fond memories, long, long ago, of
the house on Woodward Avenue. In fact, that may be where the home
improvement bug first bit me. I built my own room in the attic,
just off the Chapter room."
Broadcasts of his popular traveling road show, Ron Hazleton's
House Calls, are sponsored nationally by Lowe's Home Improvement
Warehouse.

Ron
Hazleton's room in the old Pike house at 205 South Woodward Drive.
The photo was taken sometime around 1965 when Jim Cobb '63
occupied the room. The framed picture on the right-hand bedside
table is Roz (Cobb) Cotzen. Don't know who Jim's roommate was,
but the sorority favor on the left-hand dresser says Kappa Alpha
Theta. Pike Dreamgirl Roz Cotzen was a member of Delta Zeta.

Legend & Proud Pike

|
[June, 2005] All-American, first round draft pick and proud
dad Barry Smith '72 poses with his son Andrew
at the Georgia Tech football banquet last January in Atlanta.
Andrew just completed his freshman year as a wide receiver
for the Yellow Jackets.
Above is a photo of Barry in his playing days at FSU,
not much older than Andrew is now. Barry says, "Andrew
made the Dean's List last quarter. I think he'd be a great
Pike! I'm still trying to get used to white & gold;
it sure isn't the same as our garnet & gold, is it?"
Andrew has not gone through fraternity rush at Tech yet.
Barry still holds three receiving records at FSU, and
his mark for yards-after-catch is likely to remain unbroken.
Barry and his wife Mary Ann have given millions of dollars
to Seminole athletic programs. He is also major contributor
to the Legends of Delta Lambda Campaign.
Of course, Barry has been inducted into the Seminole
Hall of Fame. Here is the inscription on his plaque:
BARRY
SMITH
Speed, good hands and concentration were the hallmarks
of number 22, wide receiver Barry Smith. From 1970
to 1972 Smith scored 27 touchdowns, 25 on pass receptions.
Both established Florida State career records as did
Smith's 164 total points scored.
In 1972, Barry Smith scored 69 passes for 1,243 yards
and 13 touchdowns. He caught 11 passes against Kansas
and 10 against Virginia Tech and Florida. After his
senior year Smith was named first team All-American
on squads selected by the Football Coaches, All-American
Competitors, and Churchmen.
After graduation, Smith played with the Green Bay
Packers and Tampa Bay Bucs. He has remained an avid
supporter of Florida State University. A brilliant
receiver in the exciting Seminole tradition, Barry
Smith's career personifies the best in Florida State
athletics.

Rick
Blythe '72 Celebrates Daughter's FSU Graduation

[June, 2005]
The University Center Club was host to the May graduation celebration
of Elizabeth Blythe, daughter of Reverend Rick Blythe '72.
With Elizabeth, are Jimmy Keen '73, her father Rick, and
rising senior and current Delta Lambda undergraduate Andrew
Pope.
Rick entered
the ministry after college and has served churches in the Jacksonville
area. Jimmy Keen has enjoyed a storied career in law enforcement
including service as adjunct professor and law enforcement instructor,
and senior inspector for the Department of Corrections (DOC),
Inspector General.
Rick was elected
vice president of his winter, 1972 pledge class. Fellow football
letterman Bob Anderson '72 served as president. Jimmy Keen
was appointed president of his fall, 1972 pledge class.
"That's true," laughs Keen. "Our pledgemaster John
Howard '72 was 6'7" and he favored big guys, so he just
announced that I was president and that it was my responsibility
to keep everyone else in line."
|
|
|
|
At
6'5" and sporting a college-era weight of about 275
lbs, Jimmy Keen cut an imposing figure in this staged
photo for Pikeboy, Delta Lambda's rush publication.
The photo was made around 1974. Sorry we don't have the
names of the Little Sisters.
|
Seminole
tight end Rick Blythe was featured in this October,
1975 issue of The Alliance Witness magazine.
The focus is the story of how Rick opened up a spiritual
ministry among FSU football players. Rick was also always
available to assist with the spiritual needs of his Pike
Brothers.

Pikes At 1989 Alpha Delta Pi Sorority Formal

From left to
right, these Brothers were guests at the 1989 Alpha Delta Pi Sorority
Formal: Chad Johnson '85, Scott Roix '85, Mike Hay 86,
and Mike Holloman '86. All four men continued to support
the Fraternity as members of the Firemen Club after 1988.
[June, 2005]
The courageous Brothers who kept Delta Lambda's tradition alive
during the darkest hours remain some of our most stalwart, loyal
and accomplished alumni today. By 1991, the Firemen Club was beginning
to include fewer initiated Pikes and more men who were recruited
specifically as Firemen. The Firemen Project, initiated in 2005,
focuses on identifying those uninitiated Firemen and inviting
them to be initiated into full Pi Kappa Alpha membership. The
Firemen Club existed from 1988 to 1993.

Super
Bowl XXXIX Liaison

Christopher
was active in Mel Martinez's successful campaign for the
United States Senate. In this photo, Christopher and Mel take
a break from discussing campaign strategy.
[June, 2005]
Christopher Shea '88 is Special Assistant to the Mayor
of Jacksonville, and was the mayor's liaison for Super Bowl XXXIX.
Their fabulous success as host of the most recent Super Bowl confirmed
Jacksonville as one of the great emerging American cities. Chris
directed the city's preparations for the big game. "Definitely
a dream job in my home town!" As a Pop Warner football
player, Chris once threw a touchdown pass in Alltel Stadium to
the cheers of a few hundred fans. Last January he helped ensure
that the play in Super Bowl XXXIX entertained tens of millions
of football fans around the world.

Hutch

"On April
9, 2005, I proposed to my longtime girlfriend, Leslie
Griffin, in New Orleans and she accepted. We are engaged to
be married on
May 27, 2006 in Pensacola. Leslie is an initiate of Alpha Delta
Pi
Sorority at Florida State and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha's
Dream Girl
Court in 2004. She currently resides in Destin where she is
assistant manager in Reservations for Sandestin Golf and Beach
Resort.
Just a little update on me... I served as IMC and SMC of the chapter.
I graduated
in 2004 and am now employed by Pi Kappa Alpha Memorial Headquarters.
I
recently was promoted to Director of Recruitment, and reside in
Memphis, Tennessee. Please help Leslie and me share the great
news of our special day."

Pike in the Crossfire!
[March
16, 2005] Legends of Delta Lambda Chairman Brent Sembler
sent along this happy bit of alumni news. The note reads: "Here
is a picture of my friend and Pike Fraternity Brother, Ken Marks
putting the 1Pike FSU license plate he got for me on my new
midnight black, 330 horsepower, twin turbo, 6 speed clutchless automatic,
Special Edition Chrysler Crossfire I bought from his Tallahassee
Dodge/Chrysler dealership!" Great advertising for the most
prestigious fraternity on the south's most glamorous campus. And
as hard as it is for a dealer to get new Crossfires, Ken
is well connected and indicates he can locate one for any good Delta
Lambda Pike Brother in good and regular standing.

[March
15, 2005] Brother Frank Hoover ' 78 writes "I
was running a race through Clermont when I saw a shopping
center with Brent Sembler's name all over it!"
The Sembler company builds shopping centers all over Florida;
Frank emailed this picture to Brent who sent it to us.
Frank
says, "I've been training for about ten years, starting
with marathons and progressing to triatholons. I ran in 15
marathons including six New York marathons in a row. Now I
have completed three Iron Man competitions. Each one
is a 2.5 mile swim + 112 mike bike + 26.2 mile run. I'll participate
in my fourth Iron Man in Tempe, AZ on April 9. The last time
I was there we lost the National Championship to Tennessee!
I hope to qualify for the Hawaii Iron Man, deemed one
of the hardest races in the world. Please give my best to
all my Brothers in phi phi kappa alpha."
