Pike Alum Donates $1 Million to FSU

Frank Burkett '85; Coach Bobby Bowden (Howard College '49); Brent Sembler '78, Chairman of the Legends Campaign; Tom Burkett '85; Lance Barton '88, Seminole Boosters Board; Scott Roix '85, Seminole Boosters Board; Steve Pickett '88; Seminole Boosters National President Andy Miller '70; David Lyons '65.

[April 29, 2004] Surrounded by fellow Pikes, Coach Bobby Bowden enjoyed a casual evening as the house-guest of Suzanne and Scott Roix '85 at their beautiful home in Largo. Fraternity Brother Lance Barton '88 and Roix are both members of the National Seminole Boosters Board of Directors. National Seminole Boosters President Andy Miller '70 and Coach Bowden accepted with great enthusiasm Scott's gift of $1 million for athletic scholarships. "Life has been very good to me," Scott said. "I have a wonderful family, loyal friends, and I have been very fortunate to find success in business." Scott said he has always been a huge Seminole fan. "I want to give back to the University that has given so much to me."

Scott has also been generous in his gifts to Delta Lambda's Legends Campaign. "I am very proud of the way Delta Lambda has come back to dominate the campus again, just like we did in the old chapter."

Scott Roix is the fourth Delta Lambda alumnus (and the fifth Pike) to make a gift of at least $1 million to Seminole Boosters in the last four years. Other gifts include a nearly $2 million contribution from Barry Smith '72 and his wife Mary Ann Stiles. The Williams family (Sabrina & Tommy Williams '73) of Thomasville, Georgia has given millions to FSU, including a $1 million gift specifically to the Boosters' Dynasty campaign. A third Delta Lambda Brother made a $1 million contribution and wishes to remain anonymous. The late Roger Holler '58, an initiate of Florida Southern College, also contributed a $1 million gift to the Boosters.

Coach Bowden Visits Harry and Deborah Sargeant

[April 22, 2004] Harry Sergeant '78 and his wife Deborah hosted an evening with Coach Bobby Bowden '49 (Howard College) and a few of their friends, including some of Harry's Florida State Pi Kappa Alpha Brothers. Coach Bowden flew in on a private jet the day before, and then spent the night as house-guest of the Sargeants.

Harry Sargeant '78 stands next to Coach Bobby Bowden '49. They are flanked by Mickey Fernandez '77 and Rick Noland '71. Standing behind them are: Dave Henry '81, Tom Wheeler '78, Legends of Delta Lambda Chairman Brent Sembler '78, Andy Miller '70, Joel Padgett '71, Chuck Joachim '81 and Charlie Barnes '65.

Gorgeous weather enhanced a leisurely day of golf followed by an elegant party on the grounds of Harry and Deborah's luxurious Broward County estate. Their son, Harry III '02 is currently an undergraduate member of Delta Lambda. Harry is one of the most generous donors to the Legends of Delta Lambda campaign. He owns the largest fleet of oceangoing oil tankers in the world.

Tom Dzien 1957 - 2004

These five friends and Brothers posed happily together at the 1978 Pike Spring Banquet. Standing are Chapter President, Tom Dzien '76, Rodney Alsop '76 and Joe Fontana '76. Seated are Steve Shambach '76 and Charlie Crist ' 76.

Brent Sembler '78 wrote to former Delta Lambda Treasurer, Don Kyle '77, telling him how proud he would have been of his fellow Pike Brothers at Tom Dzien's funeral the weekend of July 11. "I took Charle Crist to Tom's wake Friday night. Before Charlie and I left the wake we were in charge of getting pallbearers for the funeral the next day and for helping the family find a probate attorney. They were absolutely devastated and needed all the help the Pikes could offer."

Brent described how Tom Wheeler '78 and Mickey Fernandez '77 got up at 5 o'clock in the morning to fly to Tampa. Eddie Allen '79 left his family at 4:30 in the morning from his beach house in Jacksonville and drove four hours to St. Pete to serve as the 6th pallbearer. After paying his respects to Tom's family, he drove all the way back to Jacksonville to rejoin his own family.

Charlie Crist was both a pallbearer and was asked by the family to deliver the eulogy. Said Brent, "Charlie spoke beautifully of course, and said all the things I know I had in my heart. He closed with a line that haunts me and that I will never forget. He said simply: I miss my friend."

Brent told Don that just before his death, Tom had written a check for his $5,000 contribution to the Legends Campaign. Tom also created the Campaign cash-flow spreadsheet in use today. He paid his pledge in full, Brent said, because Tom loved the Fraternity and felt it was "the phi phi thing to do."

"Don, the Bonds of our Fraternity brought comfort to Tom's grieving family and friends," Brent wrote. "Our Bonds comforted me and the other Brothers who were pallbearers. Our Bonds got us closer to what is really important: the lifelong relationships that bind and sustain us."

[May, 2004] These Pikes and their wives were among 100 Seminole Booster couples cruising the French and Italian Riviera at the end of May.

[May 13, 2004] Florida State's 1986 College World Series Baseball team featured the sensational All-American pitcher/catcher combination of Ritchie Lewis '86 and Barry Blackwell '86 who led their Seminoles all the way to the national championship game. This still photo (left) from the live ESPN broadcast shows Barry and Ritchie demonstrating their signature, celebratory flying chest-butt to a national audience after another Seminole victory. Barry was 1st Team Freshman All-American in 1985, drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1988. Two-time Baseball America and TSN 1st Team All-American Ritchie Lewis was drafted in the 2nd round by the Expos in 1987, and pitched seven years in the major leagues. We caught up with the guys this spring, playing golf together in the Bobby Bowden Tournament in Daytona. "We'd like to be in touch with more of our Pi kappa Alpha Brothers," said Ritchie. "Barry and I keep up with the McDonald twins (Mike and Stephen both '85)" now Volusia County physicians.
